Sostrata, a woman of Pherae, was pregnant with worms. Being in a very bad way, she was carried into the Temple and slept there. But when she saw no distinct dream she let herself be carried back home. Then, however, near a place called Kornoi, a man of fine appearance seemed to come upon her and her companions. When he had learned from them about their bad luck, he asked them to set down on the ground the litter in which they were carrying Sostrata. Then he cut open her abdomen and took out a great quantity of worms--two wash basins full. After having stitched her belly up again and made the woman well, Asclepius revealed to her his presence and enjoined her to send thank-offerings for her treatment to Epidaurus. (Stele 2.25)[394]

Now you might be tempted to disbelieve this story, but that would leave you open to the charge of harboring naturalistic presuppositions.

When Jesus appears out of thin air to the huddled disciples back in Jerusalem (verse 36) he sends mixed signals.[395] Despite his Jacob Marley-like entrance, Jesus insists that he is no ghost and tries to prove it by showing them his hands and feet (presumably for them to touch) and asks for something to eat, since the common belief was that angels and spirits, lacking physical bodies, could not eat. But what exactly is he trying to prove? Does he mean to show he has risen from the dead in a physical form? Or is he trying to convince them that he is still alive, that he has survived the cross? Consider the parallel with Apollonius of Tyana’s reunion with his disciples, who had mistakenly given him up for dead.
